Spring pool start-up: step by step

Getting your pool ready in spring (opening it after winterizing) always follows the same order: remove the cover and clean the surface, top up the water level, adjust the pH to 7.2–7.6, apply shock chlorine (15–20 g/m³), add algaecide and flocculant, filter for 24 h non-stop and vacuum the bottom. In 48 hours the water is ready for the first swim.

Paso a paso

  1. 1

Remove the cover and clean off leaves

Before touching anything, remove leaves with a leaf skimmer and clean the cover before storing it. If the cover has dirty water on it, do NOT pour it into the pool — drain it away.

  2. 2

    Top up the water level

Fill to the middle of the skimmer. Check there are no visible leaks after 12 h.

  3. 3

    Measure and adjust the pH

Ideal pH: 7.2–7.6. If it’s high (>7.6) use pH reducer; if it’s low, pH increaser. Before the chlorine, the pH must be in range.

  4. 4

    Apply shock chlorine

15–20 g/m³ of granular shock chlorine dissolved in a bucket and poured into the pool at dusk. Filter for 12 h with no swimming.

  5. 5

    Algaecide + flocculant

The next day, multi-purpose algaecide (200 ml/25 m³) in the morning and flocculant (50–100 ml/25 m³) in the afternoon. Stop the pump for 6–12 h so the sediment settles.

  6. 6

Vacuum the bottom and filter for 24 h

Vacuum the sediment off the bottom, run the pump for 24 h, backwash the filter and measure the chlorine. Once it’s at 1–3 ppm, it’s ready for swimming.

Preguntas frecuentes

  • When should I open the pool in Valencia?

In Valencia, usually between March and April, once the daytime highs already exceed 18–20 °C. Opening early lets you have the water ready for the first warm days.

  • Do I need to drain the winterizing water?

No, except in extreme cases. Winterizing water, if it was done properly with a winterizer product, is reused after shock chlorine + flocculant + filtration. Draining means 30–50 m³ of water you can save.

  • How long does it take for the water to be ready?

With the right sequence (shock chlorine → algaecide → flocculant → filter for 24 h) it’s usually ready in 48 hours. If the winterizing was neglected (cover left open, no winterizer product) it can take 4–7 days.
